A Dose of Buckley 48 – Gas Prices

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 6, 2011 by adoseofbuckley

Gas prices have got completely out of hand… I filled my car up the other day at 137.7/litre (Americans: quit your whining, that works out to $5.21 a gallon, and you think your prices are high), meanwhile everything I read on the news is about oil prices going down based on lower demand. It doesn’t matter who’s to blame, the important question is, who can fix it? Certainly not me, and CERTAINLY not the people who try and create “Don’t Buy Gas Day” events on Facebook… but I know someone who might be able to help. Find out who by watching below:

For the 5th time in 11 years, Canada is going back to the polls for a Federal Election. If this seems a little excessive to you, it’s because it is. This week: A little primer on Canadian Politics, courtesy of your favourite vulgar professor, Buckley.

A Dose of Buckley 46 – Burqas in France

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 18, 2011 by adoseofbuckley

Recently, France outlawed covering your face in public. What makes this a real issue is that Muslim women who wear Burqas are breaking the law simply for practicing their religion and preserving their culture. Is France in the wrong? I don’t believe so… watch and find out why.

A Dose of Buckley 45 – Slutwalk

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 4, 2011 by adoseofbuckley

I feel like I haven’t REALLY offended anyone in some time now. Not that it’s necessarily my intention to do so, it’s more a byproduct of the way my mind works. Anyway, if I don’t this week, then it’ll only be because no one’s viewing this.

The Slutwalk took place this weekend in Toronto. What’s the “Slutwalk” you ask? Well, it’s a protest brought on by the whole York University thing, where a cop came in and gave a presentation on preventing sexual assault and said that you could do so by “not dressing like a slut”. Apparently this is the wrong attitude to have, because it blames the victim. I don’t feel it blames the victim any more than telling people to stay out of the African jungles if they want to avoid being eaten by lions. Sure they shouldn’t tell you where you can and can’t go, but it’s advice you can take or leave. Anyway, watch the video for my full rant:

A Dose of Buckley 42 – Grammys 2011

I really don’t understand who the Grammys are supposed to appeal to. I mean, the show itself is clearly aimed towards fans of pop music, with a few performances thrown in for mom and dad just in case they have to share the TV when the show is on… but when it comes to the awards themselves, what is it they’re trying to achieve? Are they giving awards to pop stars, or to indie groups or people generally closer to being considered true “artists” than the standard Billboard chart toppers? I don’t believe it can be both. Watch the video below for more.

A Dose of Buckley 41 – Slander (Tim Best)

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 31, 2011 by adoseofbuckley

Alright, so people who live in London, Ontario (which is pretty much the bulk of my audience, all 3 of my listeners live in London or had lived here at one time, though I believe Chinese bots download my work from my website and it eventually ends up playing on a loop in sweatshops) know the Tim Best story. Tim Best, husband of former mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best, was charged and ultimately found guilty of a few crimes recently, among them, drunk driving. This makes for a perfect example of how to say things about a person without getting in any sort of legal trouble for it, which could come in handy if you’re an aspiring broadcaster or simply someone who likes to trash talk people for the fun of it (like me). Professor Buckley presents: How not to get charged with slander (or its boring cousin, libel).

A Dose of Buckley 40 – Transportation Security Administration

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 6, 2010 by adoseofbuckley

This may seem a little dated already since people were complaining about this closer to American Thanksgiving and even before that, but I’m STILL hearing people whine about it, so I’m going for it…

The Transportation Security Administration introduced a few new procedures for maintaining the security of air travel, and many of these procedures are controversial, because the pat downs have gotten more hands-on in some areas, and they can see you naked via the full body scanner. My stance on this? Simply don’t fly!

Video games and girls… man has been trying to figure out a way to combine these two things since he first picked up a controller. And even though one website has succeeded, I have to ask… couldn’t they have done a better job? Buckley takes on GameCrush.com in this week’s A Dose of Buckley.

A Dose Of Buckley 38 – “Missioning”

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 9, 2010 by adoseofbuckley

I’ve always had a theory that in 100 years from now, as this generation of morons have even dumber children, that the Dictionary will either become thicker when it includes alternate spellings for words (“Action – see also: Akshun, Actoin, Acshon”) or become pocket-sized when future generations remove words because they’re too big and complex (anything more than 7 letters that can’t just be shortened by removing all of its vowels). The language is in trouble…

So, there’s something frustrating to me about people who are barely literate themselves coming up with new words or uses for new words. In my second of two Dose of Buckley’s this week, I look at the word “Mission”, which is now being used by this generation as a verb (that’s “akshun werd” to some of you). Some examples: “I want to mission downtown this weekend”, instead of saying “I want to go downtown to party this weekend until I can’t see or remember my own name”, or “I’m missioning to Toronto to see [insert name of indie band that hipsters love and no one else has ever heard of] on Friday”.

A Dose of Buckley 37 – Facebook Stalking

Posted in A Dose of Buckley with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 9, 2010 by adoseofbuckley

First there were sites like FourSquare… now Facebook has its own “places” app that will tell your entire friends list where you are at any given time. Is this a good thing? It certainly is for your potential attackers! Part one of two of this week’s Double Dose of Buckley.
